These plants’ flower production highly depends on rain water, and that’s why they are known as rain lily. They need a continuous shower of rain water for a few days to produce flowers. After four days of rain throughout the day, I observed plants start to push flower buds.

Flowering also depends on plant maturity. If your plant has grown from seeds or from small immature bulbs, then it will take about one year to establish. After one year they will be able to produce flowers, so always start with healthy, thick bulbs.

Growing them in bigger pots delays blooms. Rain lily produce flowers when their roots get bounded, but in large pots they expend energy to multiply bulbs instead of spending energy on flower production. In small or medium shallow pots, they get less area to multiply, get root bound quickly, and transfer energy for flower formation.

Choose a medium sized shallow pot. Keep clusters snug so roots can fill the space within a season. Repot only when bulbs are crowding the rim or pushing up.

For flower production they need moist soil with four to five hours of direct sunlight. In a shady spot they are not going to produce flowers, so provide at least four to five hours of direct sun a day. They like moist soil but not soggy soil.
Water thoroughly when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil start to dry. Do not overwater, otherwise bulbs will start rotting. Keep the potting mix evenly moist during active growth.

Lack of specific nutrients can cut blooms. Using nitrogen based fertilizer reduces flower production, and this plant does not need much fertilizer. Phosphorus and potassium based options like banana peel, bone meal, and muriate of potash encourage the plant to produce flowers.
