Have you ever tried propagating roses? I’m sharing a super simple way – natural, easy to do, and anyone can do it at home. Familiar ingredients are easy to find and bring surprising results.
You’ll be surprised at how simple yet effective this method is. Let’s begin by preparing everything we need.
1. Natural Rose Cutting Propagation – Basics

Step 1 – Choose cuttings
Choose semi hardwood stems about 15 to 20 cm long with three to five nodes. Gently cut off all the lower leaves to avoid fading or damaging the buds when new roots develop later.

Step 2 – Prep cuts
Use a clean sharp knife to cut at a 45 degree angle just below a node. Soak the base of the branch in clean water to keep it moist and soften the stem before planting.

2. Natural Rose Cutting Propagation – Materials

Rice and garlic mix
Prepare auxiliary materials before starting to mix the main rooting solution. You need 2 tablespoons of rice, as rice water is rich in vitamin B and starch that helps provide energy for cuttings.

Next take about 3 cloves of garlic. Use fresh or dried garlic, peel, chop, and add to 200 milliliters of clean water. For a quick primer on garlic’s protective role, see garlic tip.
Let nutrients soak
The combination of energy from rice and natural protection from garlic creates ideal conditions for cuttings to root quickly, stay healthy, and be less susceptible to disease. Stir well and let the mixture rest for about 10 minutes to let the natural nutrients soak into the water.

3. Natural Rose Cutting Propagation – Rooting Solution

Carrot and shallot
Use 1/2 carrot, remove the core, keep only the outer flesh, and chop finely. Carrots are rich in beta carotene, phosphorus, and potassium, nutrients that can nourish scar tissue and stimulate new stem cells to form faster.

Add 1 shallot, peeled and chopped. Purple onions contain allicin, a natural antibiotic that helps fight bacteria, prevent rot, and create favourable conditions for young roots to grow healthily.
Blend and filter
Put both ingredients into a blender with 300 milliliters of clean water. Blend to create a fresh, natural root stimulant solution that promotes root growth and protects cuttings during the most sensitive stage.

After grinding, filter out the pulp and keep only clean, nutrient rich water as your rooting solution. You can use a thin cloth or sieve to gently filter the juice.
Combine and soak medium
Pour it into the previously prepared rice and garlic mixture. Then mix 2 parts of the water – 1 part from carrots and shallots, and 1 part from rice and garlic.

You will get a complete, natural, and nutrient rich rooting solution. This mixture helps cuttings root quickly and creates a clean, antifungal, and antibacterial environment. Gently soak the soil or growing medium in the solution for 3 to 4 hours to allow nutrients to be absorbed and stimulate root growth.

4. Natural Rose Cutting Propagation – Hydroponics

Setup
In this propagation method I use hydroponics with plastic cups and a simple sponge. The sponge acts as a covering, helping to retain moisture and hold the cuttings in place.

You can also choose other substrates such as soil, rice husks, or coconut fibre. Hydroponics is clean, easy to do, easy to observe the roots, retains moisture well, and does not require soil.
Assemble and secure
Pour the solution into the prepared plastic cup. Secure the branch with plastic wire so that the leaf node faces outwards, as this is where new growth will develop.

Gently place the cup on the foam and secure it with plastic straps so the cup does not fall off. Place a larger cup on top, creating a humid, greenhouse like environment that helps the cuttings grow better.
Daily care
Place cuttings in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Mist daily in the early morning and cool afternoon to keep the branches evenly moist. Wait for the great results from these cuttings.

5. Natural Rose Cutting Propagation – Results and Aftercare

Roots and shoots
After two to three weeks, looking through a clear plastic cup you will clearly see white roots starting to appear. You will also see fresh green shoots emerging, signaling strong growth of the cuttings.

Turmeric and transplant
Sprinkle turmeric powder on the cut to help fight bacteria and prevent rot, better protecting the cuttings. Once the roots have grown firmly, move the plant to a larger pot or place it in a sunny location for further care.

Once the plant is established, move it to the garden for permanent planting. We have completed this natural rose propagation method.
Final Thoughts on Natural Rose Cutting Propagation
Choose healthy semi hardwood cuttings, prepare the rice and garlic base, then blend carrot and shallot for a powerful, natural rooting solution. Set up a simple hydroponic cup system, keep humidity high, and mist daily. Watch for roots and shoots in 2 to 3 weeks, dust the cut with turmeric, and transplant once strong.
