Dear flower lovers, I cherish every flower and green patch in the garden. Here we share and nurture a slow lifestyle where each green sprout tells a story of life and hope. Join me to discover how to propagate roses by cuttings, a natural way to grow flowers of love and beauty.
Follow these simple steps with organic ingredients for healthy roots and shoots.
1. Rose Propagation by Cuttings – Prepare Cuttings

Choose a healthy rose branch free of pests and diseases. Gently remove the bottom leaves to reduce water loss and help the branch focus its energy on growing new roots. Be gentle to protect the sleeping buds where new life will begin.

Cut the stem diagonally, leaving about 10 to 12 cm. This is the ideal length for the roots to grow evenly. Before processing, soak the branch in clean water for about 15 minutes to help reduce shock after cutting.

For another fast-start approach, see thin slice.
2. Rose Propagation by Cuttings – Natural Stimulant

Tomatoes and Garlic

Cut ripe tomatoes into small pieces. Tomatoes are a natural source of auxin, a plant hormone that stimulates the formation of new roots. They also contain enzymes, vitamin C, and organic acids that help protect plant tissue from bacteria and fungi.

Add 3 chopped, peeled garlic cloves. Garlic is a natural antibacterial agent that helps protect cuttings from fungi and bacteria. Add tomatoes and garlic to a blender with 250 milliliters water, and blend until smooth.

Blend and Soak
When combined with tomatoes, a fruit rich in natural growth hormones, we get a wonderful mixture, both stimulating rooting and strengthening the cuttings. It is a small gift from nature but very effective. Strain through a sieve to get the juice.

This is a natural rooting stimulant for our flower branches. Soak the flower stem in the prepared organic solution to allow the nutrients to penetrate deeply, stimulating the rooting process. For a citrus twist, see lemon garlic.

3. Rose Propagation by Cuttings – Development Environment

I use hydroponic nursery techniques, which help the flower branches develop roots faster and stronger. Prepare the growing medium with a natural sponge to hold the cutting in place and a clear glass jar to hold the solution. This design keeps the branches upright and creates a clean environment.

It also makes it easy to observe the growth of the roots.
4. Rose Propagation by Cuttings – Place and Care

After soaking, pour the prepared rooting solution into a glass jar, making sure the solution covers the base of the branch. Use plastic string to tie lightly to the flower stem, helping the branch stand firmly and not move. Gently secure the branch to the foam board, keeping it upright and stable.

Place the sponge and cutting in a glass jar containing the growing solution, making sure the tip of the cutting has enough contact with the solution for good root development. Cover the bottle mouth with a transparent plastic bag and press lightly to keep the moisture inside. This layer helps maintain stable humidity, limits water evaporation, and creates a naturally warm environment ideal for root formation.

Tape the bag shut tight enough to retain moisture but gentle on the plant. Place the glass jar in a cool, well lit place, away from direct sunlight, to maintain a stable temperature and clean environment. Check the solution level regularly and top up as needed to maintain constant moisture and nutrients for branch growth.

For another rooting boost, try beer boost.
5. Rose Propagation by Cuttings – Monitor and Transfer

After about 10 to 20 days, if the environment is favorable, the branch will begin to take root and sprout, the first sign of new life. Once the roots are long and established, you can gently transplant the plant to a new pot with a nutrient rich, well aerated, well draining medium such as loose soil or organic fibre. Maintain humidity by misting regularly, as consistent humidity is key to healthy growth of young plants.
