I get so many questions about what I do when one of my plants is developing brown leaf tips, which is scientifically known as necrosis. Iām going to share what I do at this point. You will get an instant solution, and I will also explain why such a problem appears.
1. Trimming Brown Leaf Tips: Instant Fix

Brown leaf edges are very common in houseplants or indoor plants. Once a plant gets brown leaf edges, it is irreversible and cannot be turned into green again. First of all, I remove the brown portions from the leaves by trimming because these are not going to be reverted.
Shape matters
I take a sanitized scissors and remove the brown portions from the leaves while maintaining the leaf shape. If you remove such type of brown portion by a straight cut, it will not look natural to your eyes and it would be noticeable. If I remove the brown portion while maintaining the leaf shape, it will look natural after trimming, and the plant will look very healthy and fresh instantly.
On pothos leaves with some brown edges, a straight cut will not look natural and it would be noticeable. If I maintain the leaf shape, it will look natural after trimming. For a deeper breakdown, see pothos leaf tips turning brown.
When to remove a whole leaf

If half or most of the portion of a leaf becomes brown or yellow, then it’s better to remove the whole leaf from the plant because it leaves a few areas to remove. After trimming the edges, the plant looks far better. Not only the brown leaf edges but also if I find that my plant has yellow leaf edges or black leaf edges, I also remove those by trimming.

Timing and tools
You can easily control the brown or yellow leaf aging by trimming. It doesn’t hurt the plant and you can do this any time of the year. Just make sure your pruner or scissor is clean and sharp.
2. Trimming Brown Leaf Tips Is Not the Final Cure

If a plant is sick or disturbed, it shows its stress or sickness on its leaves first. Whether a plant has brown leaf edges or yellow leaf edges, trimming is not the permanent solution to these problems.
3. Why Brown Leaf Tips Appear

A plant shows necrosis or brown leaf edges if it gets too much water, too little water, becomes infested by pests, lack of nutrients, high humidity and high heat. There are some specific groups of plants that are susceptible to some particular minerals such as fluorine and chlorine as well as sodium salts. If you water those particular plant species with such minerals and salts containing water, the plants will develop brown leaf edges due to the accumulation of salts and minerals in the leaf tips.
